There’s so much of it all around…but how to define depression actually?

July 12th, 2011

To define depression, it is actually a condition of low frame of mind and antipathy to activities that can have an effect on anybody’s thoughts, feelings, behavior and physical welfare. It can include feeling sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, worthless, guilty, irritable or restless. Dejected mood states are normal reactions to some life events, or some symptoms of some medical conditions (like Addison’s disease or hypothyroidism), or maybe a trait of some psychiatric syndromes.

Sometimes kith and kin recognize when somebody is depressed. It varies from people to people how each would define depression like. They might take action with kindness, love, or support, hopeful about the sadness to pass soon. They might proffer to listen and take note of what the person has to share, but that would only happen if the person himself would want to talk it out. However, if this kind of a depressed mood does not pass within a short time, then the concerned ones are expected to persuade the suffering person to seek help from some doctor or counselor.

GENERAL REASONS WHICH DEPRESS:

There are no specific causes which would define depression. Many factors can play an unexpected role and that may be including environment, life events, genetics, medical conditions, or maybe the way in which people respond to certain things that generally come about in their usual lives.

GENETICS-Some people inherit certain genes which make them more prone to depression. Although genes can be a factor, they surely aren’t the only cause. This is because even people who don’t have a genetic tendency which would define depression to arise might be regular with getting depressed, and even people who are supposed to be tending towards getting depressed might be just fine and happy.

LIFE EVENTS-The demise of any family member, or friend, or a pet can sometimes go beyond regular anguish and sometimes may even lead to severe depression. Other complicated life events, like when parents dissociate, or remarry, can exceedingly trigger depression. Impactful events like moving out or shifting schools can also be emotionally challenging.

FAMILY, SOCIAL ENVIORNMENT-Stressful, unhappy, or negative family ambiance might affect the self-esteem of some teens, and lead them to depression. High stress living situations like poverty, homelessness, family or relationships’ or community violence may define depression too.

Chemical alteration in the brain surely affects moods – alcohol or other drugs are commonly known of having depressant effects. Negative social or personal consequences of abuse of substances may also lead to severe unhappiness or depression.

TYPES OF DEPRESSION

Doctors, who take care of depression, differentiate between two types of depression. The short-lasting, more severe type defines major depression and the less severe but longer-lasting form is called dysthymia.

To define depression referring to some depressive reactions to any explicit life-event, the term used is adjustment disorder with depressed mood.

Bipolar disorder can be related to mania. This term is for unusually high temper and tremendous bursts of strange activities or liveliness.
